First Aid training

Would you know what to do in the event of your child or grandchild having an accident? Did you know that statistically many more children have accidents over the school summer holidays?

Today we’re launching a summer campaign to encourage as many parents and grandparents as possible to have some basic first aid training before the long summer school holidays start. We’re so passionate about this that we are going to subsidise the cost of places on first aid courses!

Why do we care so much? Before Sarah set up Busy Parents Network she was a solicitor for nearly 15 years helping families whose children were catastrophically injured either with brain injuries or spinal cord injuries as a result of accidents. Sarah knows that it can make a huge difference to a child’s long term outcome if there is even one person on the scene of an accident who knows even basic first aid.

So, we’ve teamed up with Mini First Aid to run a series of first aid classes during June and July. We’ve deliberately put them on at the weekends, evenings and during the day time to hopefully find a time to suit everyone.

And because we believe you are never too young to learn first aid skills, we’ve got a FREE course for pre-schoolers and a subsidised course for children aged 8-12 years. It is very empowering for children to know what to do if they or their siblings have an accident.

So, here’s how it works:-

  1. Select a date for a course (dates and times below)
  2. Phone or email Anna Ruffle of Mini First Aid on 07397 233245 or to book your place(s)
  3. You pay £10 for a child’s place or £15 for an adult place (normally £12 and £20)
  4. Turn up on the day at Bournville Community Hub to get skilled up!

The dates are:-

Wednesday 7th June – 7.30pm

Sunday 11th June       – 10am

Sunday 9th July          –  2.30pm. (Kids and adults classes running simulataneously)

Friday 14th July 10am – FREE 30 minute pre-school class

If there is sufficient demand, we can look at putting on additional classes.

So, don’t delay and book your place today! You could help to save a child’s life.

Donations of advent calendars to the Hub this Monday for local Food Bank

The Hub is accepting donations of advent calendars this Monday which will then be taken to the local B30 Foodbank in Cotteridge. Despite being located between chocolate-box Bournville and Restoration-site Kings Norton, 40% of the children in the locality live in poverty.

If you are able to pop a spare Advent calendar in to your shopping tomorrow or over the weekend that would be great, then just drop it in to the Hub between 9am and 3pm on Monday.

Any donations gratefully received!

Strings Club – new classes added!

The Strings Club Spring Term – now on sale!
Bournville’s aspiring young musicians can experience award-winning music tuition right on their doorstep with The Strings Club’s Term-Time courses.

Commencing 16 January 2016, The Strings Club’s 10-week courses for 4 – 11 year olds will take place every Saturday morning at The Bournville Community Hub – with even more beginners classes added due to popular demand.

Parents can enrol their little ones into Strings Club Minis Ukulele especially created for children aged 4-5 years in their first year of school. Older children in Year 1 and above can chose from the Sound Start groups and choose between learning the guitar or violin.

To celebrate the launch of its new Spring term courses, on Saturday 9 January 2016 The Strings Club is holding an Open Morning at The Bournville Community Hub so children can have a taster session in their chosen instrument before enrolling onto the full course.

Led by the UK’s leading string teachers, every Strings Club lesson is packed full of inspiring and interactive learning, focusing on musicianship, group learning and concluding with a grand concert each term – giving children the chance to proudly show what they have learnt to friends and family!

The 10 week Term-Time courses start from £15 per lesson, with instrument hire from just £3.50 per week.

Bournville Hub’s first Live Arts Evening hits the right note!

On Friday night the Bournville Hub was transformed into an intimate evening venue featuring classical guitarist Myles Payne. The entire audience were new to the Hub. Everyone had a wonderful evening enjoying live music and good conversation afterwards. Thoroughly relaxing and a great way to liven up a dreary winters evening! Watch this space for more Live Arts Events on your doorstep!

Magic of Science – a huge hit!

The Magic of Science show at half term was a great day out for all budding scientists. Dr Matt Pritchard entertained and wowed both children and parents at his shows whilst Lisa Jayne Colvin was on hand helping the children take part in a variety of hands on sessions and explaining the science behind the experiments. It was science that was accessible to all – messy, noisy and great fun!
